| Frequently Asked Questions | ||||||||
Q: How much compost should I take off the root ball when I re-pot into Seramis? A: Do not take any soil off the root ball except what falls away naturally. If you shake it or scrape the compost away from the root ball you risk damaging the root hairs at the tips of the main roots and these are the only part of the root system that can take up food and water. Q: Does it matter if I take the watering indicator out to check the colour? A: Yes. Angle the watering indicator so that it can be read easily without removing it. If you keep moving or twisting it you may damage the tip and it will stop working. We recommend that you write the amount of water to be added each time the indicator window turns red (one quarter of the pot volume) on the back of the indicator for easy reference. Q: Can I use 100% Seramis for outside containers? A: Yes. Outdoors you will obviously need to use normal, free draining containers. Take care if your container is on a patio, or a hanging basket is against a painted wall – the first few times you water you will get some reddish run-off as any Seramis dust gets washed through and this could stain. Q: Can I use Seramis as a decorative top dressing? A: Yes, but you will not get the main benefits that you get by surrounding the root ball with Seramis – less frequent watering and being able to use non-draining containers. Q: Can I use the Seramis watering indicator in plants potted in soil or compost? A: Yes. It will work quite well and help you to avoid over-watering. But again, you will not get the main benefits of the Seramis system – less frequent watering. Q: Can I use any other sort of plant food for plants in Seramis? A: No. The Seramis liquid plant food is specially formulated to be completely absorbed by the plant – no residue remains in the granules. As plants in Seramis are grown in watertight containers, if you use a differently formulated feed you will, over time, get a build up of nutrients in the granules which can harm the plant. Q: If I don’t like the colour of Seramis, can I cover it up? A: Yes. You can put a shallow layer of gravel, pebbles, moss or any of the decorative coloured glass pebbles over the top of the Seramis and just push the indicator through them into the main root ball. Q: Is there any type of watertight container I can’t use with Seramis? A: No. You can even use wood or basketware lined with tough polythene. Take care with unglazed ceramics though as, although water won’t pour through you will get some seepage so be careful not to put directly onto a polished surface or a carpet. Use a mat. Q: Is there any sort of plant I can’t grow in Seramis? A: No. But for some plants such as cacti, orchids etc the watering and feeding programme is different from that described on the pack. |
