  Cuttings and Seeds

CUTTINGS

• Cuttings of all types, including many that are traditionally difficult, root very quickly and form very vigorous root systems in Seramis. The granules provide excellent aeration at the root forming area – essential for root development.

• In watertight containers push the watering indicator into the centre of the container; water at the recommended rate – one quarter of the pot volume each time – when the indicator turns red; feed with Seramis Liquid Plant Food at half the recommended rate.

• Alternatively you may use Seramis in free-draining containers without the watering indicator; feed as above.

• Cover with a polythene bag or cold frame to maintain the humidity.

• Once rooted, transfer cuttings into compost if they are to be planted outside, or into larger containers of Seramis. There is no need for plants grown in Seramis to have a compost root ball at the centre.

SEEDS

• Seeds will germinate and grow as well, or even better, in Seramis since it maintains the supply of air to the root forming area.

• Use watertight containers as for houseplants, or free draining pots.

• A watering indicator is not essential for seed raising since after germination seedlings will be pricked out quickly into a permanent home.

• There should be a half inch gap between the surface of the Seramis and the rim of the pot.

• Water, adding Seramis Liquid Plant Food at half the recommended rate, before sowing.

• Sow seed on the surface of the granules and lightly ‘mist’ to wash them down into the gaps.

• Cover the pot with cling film and keep shaded until germination.

• After germination remove the cling film immediately. The young seedlings can later be transplanted into more Seramis, or into compost, with strong, fibrous root systems.

RE-USE YOUR SERAMIS

• Seramis granules will not break down or desiccate. They can be re-used indefinitely and can even be re-sterilised in a baking tray in the oven at Gas Mark 6 (200 degrees Celsius ) for 30 minutes.
