| Bonsai in Seramis | |||||||||||
| Bonsai need a growing medium which is firm but which allows air to penetrate to the roots. The medium should contain as little fertiliser as possible, but as the rooting space is small due to the shallow containers, a constant supply of nutrient is required. Liquid feed is preferable to granular to prevent root damage. Since roots as well as branches require occasional cutting, roots must be easily accessible. Watertight containers: Seramis can be used for bonsai in watertight containers if they are to be kept indoors. The containers are too shallow to use a watering indicator, so water when the top layer of Seramis dries out – it will become lighter in colour. Seramis Liquid Plant Food is very suitable for bonsai as it contains only a moderate nutrient level in fully soluble form. Use half the strength recommended on the bottle or feed every second watering. Free draining containers: Seramis can also improve water retention and aeration of the roots in bonsai grown outdoors in free draining containers. Bonsai grow very well in a mixture of equal parts sieved leaf mould or composted bark and Seramis. The compost constituent can be adapted to suit individual preferences. Bonsai in this mixture will require frequent watering and feed must be minimal to prevent over-vigorous growth.
